Climate change remains one of the main societal challenges humanity is facing in the 21st century, with road transport as one of the main contributors to carbon emissions. Whilst the implementation of electric vehicles can reduce carbon emissions, the adoption is lagging as barriers exist for consumers. One important barrier is the slow charging times of electric vehicles and even fast charging is still too slow!

Therefore, student team InMotion develops cell-level cooling technology which aims to facilitate ‘Electric Refueling’, meaning that the charging times of electric vehicles become equal to those of refueling petrol-powered cars. Showcasing the possibilities of Electric Refueling in the toughest conditions, being endurance races, will show its potential anywhere. Ultimately, InMotion dreams of showcasing Electric Refueling at the 24h race of Le Mans.

Rijkswaterstaat: traffic management

April 16, 2023 - April 19, 2023

Rijkswaterstaat is an executive organization of the Dutch Ministry of Transportation and Watermanagement.

Rijkswaterstaat maintains and develop national roads, waterways and open waters, and will be supporting a sustainable environment. With others we commit ourselves to a country that is protected against floods. With sufficient nature and sufficient and clean water. Where you can travel fluently and safely from A to B. To be engaged with others to make the Netherlands safe, livable and accessible.

Management area of main highways network.

  • 0,7 percent of the Netherlands are highways
  • These highways are among the most
intensively used roads in the world
  • 68 billion vehicle kilometres on a yearly basis
  • 3 million road users on a daily basis

To perform traffic management we have 5 regional traffic centers in the Netherlands. All 5 traffic centers are responsible for safety and flow on our highways every traffic center has their own area. The traffic center in Helmond is responsible for the highways in het southern part of the Netherlands, the provinces Zeeland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg.

Road to Zero-Emission

April 16, 2023 - April 19, 2023

Westport Fuel Systems shows its Dual Fuel Truck solution, that is the intermediate one to Zero emission, and the final Zero-emission H2-HPDI truck solution. Both offer a low Total Cost of Ownership. These developments are part of the Dutch Funding programs.

In order to present a scalable yard automation solution it is also important to consider the use case of short distance low speed manoeuvring on a distribution center with a Cost Efficient Yard Automation Solution (CEYAS). A new solution is demonstrated by TNO that amongst others can be used to move fully loaded trailers on a yard while the electrical road vehicle are being charged or scarce drivers utilized on public road logistics.

Electrification and driver shortage leaves the logistic sector with new challenges. The Verhagen Leiden yard automation contributes to the solution of these challenges by better utilisation of drivers (public road deployment) and equipment (charge electrical trucks on yard) by automation solutions that take over on-yard logistic tasks. Automated trailer movers also expand the pool of outdoor automation solutions (yard tractors, public road trucks) and with that supports the development of a scalable automation solution such that the best logistic solution/vehicle can be chosen for the job.

We are Solar Team Eindhoven, a team of 16 enthusiastic and ambitious students from the Eindhoven University of Technology. We strive for a sustainable future, where life is powered by the sun. As a student team, we have the power and freedom to be innovative. Not limited by market demands we can start the design process from scratch and free ourselves from preconceptions. This means that we, unlike the industry, can bridge the gap between technological innovation and our daily life. This allows us to innovate fast in a short time. By creating innovative, energy-efficient solar vehicles we inspire the current market and society to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future – in both mobility and energy.  In a single hour, the amount of power from the sun that strikes the Earth is more than the entire world consumes in a year. By using our greatest energy source, the sun, we can make mobility not about energy consumption rather energy production. We believe that the solution for a sustainable future in mobility lies in the vehicles themselves. By means of solar panels on your vehicle you are independent of the charging infrastructure. By creating innovative, energy-efficient solar vehicles we inspire the current market and society to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future – in both mobility and energy.

The current problems with research in Antarctica are that the infrastructure is not sustainable, unsafe, limited in range, and extremely expensive. All of these factors contribute such that research is not fully optimized in Antarctica. This is the underlying problem: that we do not know enough about Antarctica and that the current infrastructure cannot provide significant new opportunities for research predicting climate change and understanding our planet.

By making a sustainable and autonomous rover, student team Polar aims to ensure that research is not dependent on fossil fuels or direct human involvement, that it is safer and more affordable, which will eventually lead towards more opportunities for research in Antarctica. Polar’s solution is unique because such an autonomous electric vehicle has never been built for Antarctic usage, and there is currently no competitor in this field. As such, you could essentially compare it to a Mars rover.

5G Blueprint Demonstration

April 16, 2023 - April 19, 2023

The final tests for teleoperation using 5G SA and NSA in the framework of the 5G-Blueprint Project have now been completed. The teleoperation solution offers multiple solutions within the logistics chain to reduce the idle time of drivers/operators, such as 1) the possibility of a multi-operator setup, and 2) increased worker mobility. Teleoperation allows a single operator to switch between different vehicles remotely using a single station. The savings in costs, time, damages, etc. can be enormous, while also providing a positive boost to the human capital agenda. On a medium-sized distribution site (~6000 transport movements per year), a savings of a full man-year is very possible. Along with teleoperation, different assistent systems have been developed. One of them is the auto docking functionality. A system that can park a truck-trailer combination autonomously to a dock. On our demo-stand you experience teleoperation yourself and take a look inside the control room of a teleoperator.

The SolarOnTop saves around 2.000 liters of fuel per year, that’s almost 7 tonnes of CO2!

IM Efficiency is a technology scale-up from the Netherlands and we’re making trucks sustainable. Instead of only focusing on the truck itself, we use renewable energy sources in the trailer. We believe that the trailer is the key to creating fully sustainable transportation that is reliable and affordable. Our first product is SolarOnTop: a plug&play upgrade for trucks and trailers to reduce diesel fuel consumption with onboard solar energy. Flexible solar modules on top of the trailer generate electricity, a technology that is durable, light weight, and ultra-thin. An intelligent energy management system decides what to do with the solar energy to have the biggest impact: it can be stored in the SolarOnTop lithium battery for later use, or supplied directly to the truck and trailer to save fuel. At IM Efficiency, we turn trucks into mobile solar parks. That’s why we say: we make trucks love the sun.

During the facility tour we show a complete vehicle project and what we can bring on new technology integration.

Capgemini Engineering will show several interesting demos and give a sneak preview of their newly planned battery test center. 2 highlights:

  • Battery test center.

The need for validation and certification of high-capacity battery cells, modules and packs has sharply increased and has become a critical challenge for OEMs and tier 1 suppliers due to the enormous complexity and rapidly changing technology. In our newly built Battery Testing Laboratory, we provide performance testing for battery cells, modules and packs with regard to efficiency and effectiveness, aging tests as well as safety and reliability tests. We also support with corrosion, vibration and environmental testing.

  • Hardware in the Loop testing.

An important advantage of a HIL simulation is that an estimate of the expected behavior can be obtained during the development of a design. A further advantage of a HIL simulation is that all kinds of simulations can be performed without risk, which are very difficult or hardly impossible in reality. This results in great benefits in terms of time and costs. During the facility tour we show a live demonstration of a HIL application.
